As you may have read already, a few weeks ago I visited my friend in Florence. Being the resourceful and organised person that I am, I decided to get more out of the trip to Italy and so managed to combine this trip with visiting my sister in Milan and checking out the World Expo which had been taking place since the spring.
We saw every pavilion!.. from the outside... as it happened that some countries pavilions had 3 hour long queues to get in, but we still managed to visit quite a few which didn't require us to stand for ridiculous amounts of time outside in the rain (darn you falls hopes of sunny Italian weather!).
The Lithuanian pavilion was naturally one of the ones we visited and I'm glad we did. It was really nice with a beautifully done up interior (the exterior did not do it justice). It was also the only pavilion where we got some free samples (ah, home country, you did not disappoint). We were lucky that it just so happened they were doing wine tastings the weekend we came to visit. Now you might be thinking that Lithuania does not produce wine... and we don't produce wine... from grapes that is. But we do make it from berries and apparently a new winery has opened up that does just that. So, all in all, we were proud of the LT pavilion, money spent wisely. Also, who knew black bread ice-cream was a traditional desert?.. They were serving it along with Lithuanian meals. Learn new things about your culture every day...
A lot of pavilions had incorporated green walls or gardens into their exhibits as the theme for this years expo was food and sustainable development. Loved seeing all these plants everywhere, would like to see more green walls and roofs popping up around the place in cities.
All in all, the expo was a cool experience despite a few pavilions being pretty much slightly decorated souvenir shops. Luckily didn't have to wait too long to get into those or would have been very disapointing. Very much enjoyed the other pavilions, but if I go to another world expo at some point, might try to go in the first months it opens as it seems most people wait till the last month to visit and so the 5 hour queues begin.
Bear anyone?.. |
